Women-led businesses set to double in the next 10 years

A new report predicts that women are set to take a leading role in UK enterprise as business owners and senior managers over the next decade.
‘The Rise of Lipstick Entrepreneurs’, the report by The Future Laboratory for Avon and the Federation of Small Businesses, predicts that the number of self-employed women and female-owned businesses could rise to over two million in the next 10 years.
The last decade has seen sustained growth in female enterprise, showing a 17% rise since 2000. Women’s increasing desire for flexible career options is cited as a key driver, as well as developments in technology that allow women to start up businesses and work from home.
The report also predicts a major shift in the ratio of female CEOs of FTSE 100 companies, with numbers expected to increase from just 5 in 2008 to over 50 in the next decade. The recession is viewed as a key factor in opening up opportunities to women, as shareholders question the risk-taking approach taken by many male business leaders. Read the report in full at
