Family Lawyer

I have practised exclusively in the field of family law since qualifying as a solicitor in 2003 and deal with all aspects. This will include negotiating pre-nuptial and co-habitation agreements where parties are either going to get married or are going to live together and, most commonly, want to protect the assets they already own. I also deal with divorce and the division of matrimonial property between separating spouses, and also with cohabitants’ claims, both on separation and death. I also have extensive experience in child law matters, including adoption, residence, contact, and relocation. I have a particular interest in cases with a cross-border or international element and I have been instructed by the Scottish Government in numerous cases concerning international child abduction and/or the wrongful retention of children in Scotland. I have also acted in a number of cases requiring the enforcement of English child welfare related orders in Scotland.

I am also a dedicated fertility lawyer within our Modern Families Unit. At BTO we firmly believe that everyone should be able to create the family they desire, whether this is via assisted reproduction, adoption or a blended family. We support and fight for all families, no matter their make-up and will provide them with all the legal advice they need over their fertility journey.

Where possible, I will strive to resolve my family law cases by negotiation. I am a trained collaborative lawyer and am a firm believer that, in appropriate cases, this process can offer clients a more constructive, family centred and solutions based approach to their separation. I see this as a considerable benefit to them, particularly when they have children, and are, therefore, going to have to continue to communicate with each other, potentially for some time to come.

When court action is necessary, I am an experienced litigator and have acted in divorce, child welfare and cohabitation cases in various Sheriff Courts across Scotland. I have also acted in a number of complex and novel cases in the Court of Session and in an application to the European Court of Human Rights.

I was accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in family law in 2011, re-accredited in 2016 and re-accredited in 2021. I am a Family Law Association member and a past committee member and Treasurer. I am currently chair and committee member of the Glasgow arm of the collaborative law organisation, Consensus Collaboration Scotland. I also regularly blog on family law topics and have been invited to speak at a number of family law conferences.

If you or anyone you know could do with some family law or fertility law advice please do not hesitate to be in touch.
