A big "thank you" to Julie Hall for mentoring SWIB members

How did you begin mentoring?
I did some coaching training while I worked for a charity and I found people would tell me things. The first people I mentored wanted to talk about business issues but this soon progressed to a wider scope. They wanted to talk about ‘where am I going?’. Nowadays people sometimes just come up and say ‘can I speak to you’. Maybe it is because I pay attention: I listen and I watch closely. A mentor must see the skills and ability that people have that they do not see in themselves. Even more important, they must be approachable.

Describe your approach?
I like helping people with a mix of coaching where both personal and business questions are addressed. For example, if something is a persistent obstacle in business I might explore ‘what is stopping you?’ on a personal level. Whether it is question of fear, motivation or just lack of confidence the personal aspect of business success fascinates me.

What are the your achievements?
I seek to develop a person’s sense of empowerment and the confidence to press ahead. In a nutshell it’s all about self belief. I don’t see this as my achievement! It’s the person themselves that achieves.

Did you ever have a mentor?
I am probably as bad a culprit as any for feeling self doubt. I don’t have a specific mentor, but friends step in when I need it. We all do, from time to time. To be on the receiving end was a bit strange in the beginning and it showed me that mentoring is all about trust.

Who do you work with?
Mainly but not exclusively with women. Sometimes people need to verbalise in order to reflect. Before that can happen they need to trust and then you see it all coming out. You have to be honest and you cannot follow a script.
Sometimes it doesn’t work so well and things remain hidden - even from the person themselves.
I would say here that choosing and matching with the right mentor that suits you is important. Perhaps sometimes I am not a good match: it is the individual’s decision.

What motivates you?
For me, just a little difference can be enough: to feel that I have added something gives me enormous satisfaction. My mum was a hugely caring person and my siblings and myself as children were encouraged to talk to people and be interested in them. When I see someone struggling away on their own, or someone who does not realise how good they are, I want to help.
