Can you help? Looking for speakers...
Glasgow University Business Club is a student-run organisation that provides the academic, professional and social opportunities for students to form a strong business network.
In the upcoming autumn semester, the society is organising an Industry Insight Programme, which is designed to help inform students' future academic progression and career choices by developing an understanding of the key trends and operations of major industry streams.
For this programme, they plan to organise a series of guest talks and workshops that bridge theory and practice, and are wondering if any swib members or friends could help? They want to find industry professionals who are willing to go along for an evening and share their work experience and their industry expertise with them.
The programme takes place in October and November. The events are scheduled fortnightly starting from Tuesday, 2nd October 2018 (which does need a guest speaker). The events usually last for 1-2 hours and will take place after 5.30pm in the evening (timing can be flexible to suit the speaker).
They are particularly looking for a CSR/Sustainability professional in the energy industry and a Supply Chain & Logistics expert, but would be more than happy to hear from anyone who would be willing to join the programme.
For each event, they provide the location, IT equipment and everything else that the guest speaker may needs. In addition, all programme participants will be invited to a free networking dinner at the end of November.
If you are interested in helping, please contact Lisa at gubusinessclub@gmail.com.
Do please pass this on to anyone you know who might be able to help.
New SCDI report published
SCDI has published its Connectivity Commission report, catchily titled "Scotland’s Big Mo: Industrial Strategy, Inclusive Growth and the Future of Mobility".
The
Commission focused on transformative changes within the transport market,
particularly due to digitalisation and decarbonisation, and the potential
implications of new technologies for connectivity in Scotland. Its remit was land transport, but the report recognises that changes are taking place
across all forms of transport.
The momentum of change in mobility will only accelerate,
and Scotland has the potential to be a location for key innovations. The report makes recommendations for Government, industry and regulators on the
opportunities and challenges from changes in supply and demand, so that all
parts of Scotland can benefit - economically, socially and environmentally -
from a world-class connectivity system.
You'll find the report on the SCDI website.

Free webinars from the Supplier Development Programme
If you're a small business interested in bidding for public sector work, the Supplier Development Programme exists to help you. And it is free!
Sign up to SDP, and a world of training opens up to you. As well as physical events, there are online options: videos, written resources and webinars that allow you to attend an event from your desk.
You can find the basic webinars here, introducing you to working with the public sector. There is also a new series of webinars ("Talking Tenders") introducing you to specific local authorities, such as Fife, West Dunbartonshire and Stirling. You'll find these listed on the SDP Events calendar.
If you're already bidding but missing out on those contracts, there are webinars on "improving your bid score", covering what buyers are looking for in submitted tenders.
And it's all free! If you're not already a member of SDP, it's worth joining and signing up for their newsletters to keep informed about future events.
How best to support women-owned businesses?
Women's Enterprise Scotland (WES) has been commissioned by the Scottish Government to carry out research into enterprise support for women-led businesses in Scotland, with a focus on best practice in tackling the gender gap which currently exists in enterprise. While women represent 51% of the Scottish population, just 20% of all businesses are majority owned by women.
The research is a joint initiative involving Scottish Enterprise, Highlands & Islands Enterprise, Business Gateway and the Scottish Government.
As part of the research WES would like to hold focus groups involving women-owned businesses. This will cover:
- Personal experience of business support in Scotland.
- Gender themes in business support.
- Awareness of gender-specific research, programmes and best practice.
It is not a requirement for participating businesses to have had experience or knowledge of gender-specific business support delivery. This is a knowledge gathering exercise to map the current support available and gauge understanding of gender-specific business development issues.
WES is looking for people to join them at a focus group. If you would like to attend, please contact WES, telling them where you are based and they'll be in touch with details of any local sessions.
